Former Bersih 2.0 chairman backs Dr M's naming of MACC chief

Malay Mail May 20, 2018

New Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah said the appointment of Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull as the chief commissioner of the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) now was necessary despite breaching Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto. Despite critics pointing out that PH pledged to such appointments to be made by Parliament, the former Bersih 2.0 chairman said the move now was justified and that Parliament’s consent was not needed. “The MACC is an important institution to curb corruption and if there is no one to helm we need to find a capable replacement. “Therefore his appointment is the new Pakatan government’s continued fulfilment of promises made to the people,” she said during a Facebook live interview session with Sinar Harian today. The MACC chief’s appointment was announced by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad after the latter chaired the Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting on Thursday. Mohd Shukri, 58, served with the national graftbusters for 32 years before retiring on July 31, 2016. The last position he held was MACC’s deputy chief commissioner (operations). He replaced Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad who submitted a letter on May 14 to the Chief Secretary to the Government to end his contract as MACC chief commissioner. His contract was supposed to end in July, 2021.
